4.600 €

Androetta Bekker was born in 1982 in a small town in the Free State, where she grew up immersed in a rich blend of South African cultures.   Introduced to art at an early age by her mother, an artist herself, Androetta Bekker learned to see creativity as a powerful means of expression. However, it was only later in life—after a successful career in the sciences was disrupted by a traumatic accident—that she fully reconnected with her artistic roots. This dramatic personal shift profoundly shaped her belief that change, however difficult, should be embraced, as it often serves as a catalyst for discovery and growth.   Now based in Cape Town, Androetta Bekker draws inspiration from the country’s vibrant cultural diversity. Her bold and colourful works are characterised by expressive illustration and striking surface patterns. While her visual language is eye-catching and dynamic, her true artistic obsession lies in exploring the depth and complexity of universal human emotions. Through her portraiture, she investigates how people rarely experience a single emotion in isolation—how sadness may be tinged with joyful nostalgia, or how pride may be shadowed by fear and anger. Her work captures these layered, often contradictory inner states with nuance and empathy. Androetta Bekker’s debut exhibition took place in December 2020. Since then, she has received notable recognition, including a Top 40 placement in the 2021 Sanlam Portrait Award and a Silver Award in Camelback Gallery’s international Black and White Art Competition the same year. Her work has been exhibited in group shows at respected galleries such as Artisart, Cahoots, and Rust-en-Vrede, as well as the “Home Is Where the Art Is” exhibition at the Zeitz MOCAA.   These accolades have led to numerous invitations for group exhibitions and commissions, including international showcases. Androetta Bekker exhibited her work in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in both November 2022 and 2023, and in Kassel, Germany. In 2024, her work was featured at the Positions Berlin Art Fair, an international group exhibition that highlighted her distinctive surface patterns and emotive exploration of the human condition.   Internationally, Androetta Bekker is a continuous participant in the Travelling Art Gallery artists’ initiative. In Cape Town, she is represented by The Artists Gallery.

Claude Chandler was immersed in Durban's art scene from an early age, as both his parents were talented local artists and prominent figures in the community. At school, Claude's art caused controversy, and his mother was occasionally summoned to class due to teachers' concerns. While this proved a hindrance at school, it later proved beneficial in his career: In 2011, he won second place at the KZNSA members' exhibition for his scatological interpretation of the theme "The Bold and the Beautiful." After graduating in 2011, Claude moved to Cape Town to further his artistic pursuits. He was a finalist in the 2013 SPI Portrait Awards and has participated in numerous art fairs and group exhibitions. Two of his solo exhibitions in Cape Town sold out completely. Since 2017, Claude has also been creating murals in Cape Town, gradually building a portfolio of street art. He currently works at EastSide Studios, an artist collective that he also manages. In 2018, he also launched a new project with blended audio and has since hosted a podcast about visual art called Art Pod.

Biometric Encryption I

2.200 €

Corné Eksteen, born in 1973 in Zastron, Free State, is a contemporary visual artist whose remarkable talent, technique, and ever-evolving style have established him as a respected figure in the South African and international art world. After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa, Eksteen's early professional experience in creative fields such as menswear design, interior design, and digital design shaped his artistic vision and enriches the expressive layers of his current work. Since 1996, Corné Eksteen has worked as a freelance visual artist and exhibits regularly. His artistic practice is rooted in the traditions of figurative and abstract painting, which he seamlessly blends to create works that transcend mere physical likeness. Eksteen's portraits are not simply representations of his subjects; they are explorations of the complexities of identity, self-perception, and the fluid, often fragmentary nature of the modern psyche. As Eksteen himself describes, his works attempt “to visually dissect and deconstruct the subject matter in order to understand the dynamics and transience of the 21st-century psyche.” His paintings aim to spark a dialogue about personal identity, inviting viewers to reflect on the mutable and fragmented nature of the self in modern life and to seek new archetypes that address the challenges and narratives of the 21st century. Corné Eksteen’s creative process is both meticulous and innovative. Each artwork begins with several sittings with the model, followed by the digital manipulation of reference materials. The painting phase then employs experimental techniques that play with contrasts—balancing transparency and opacity, darkness and light, and controlled precision with expressive spontaneity. Although Eksteen’s works may appear minimalist at first glance, they confront viewers with a raw emotional intensity that resonates on multiple levels. A hallmark of Corné Eksteen's artistic career is his constant evolution. He continually reinvents his portrait style and opens new thematic "chapters" that expand the boundaries of his artistic language, captivating his audience and leaving them eagerly anticipating his next work. Eksteen's career is marked by a series of successful solo exhibitions and international acclaim. Since 2018, his works have been prominently featured in the exhibitions of the Travelling Art Gallery in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Palma de Mallorca, and Kitzbühel (Austria). In Cape Town, Corné Eksteen is represented by the Artists Gallery. His growing recognition and success testify to his exceptional artistic vision, technical mastery, and the profound emotional expressiveness that characterizes his work.

Cornè Theron

Echoes Through Glass

100 cm x 120 cm

5.400 €

Cornè Theron is a former notary public who turned to art and quickly gained recognition for her innovative and emotionally resonant works. Born in 1974 in Worcester, South Africa, Cornè Theron studied law at the University of the Orange Free State, graduating with an LLB in 1997. After several years practicing law, she transitioned to the art world, where her talent was quickly recognized. She was a finalist in the Crouse Gallery's Fresh Talent Competition and was nominated for the SA Taxi Art Awards. Theron participated in numerous group exhibitions and presented her first solo exhibition in Johannesburg. In 2019, Cornè Theron moved to France on a talent visa from the French government to further develop her artistic career. During this time, living in a farmhouse near Cape Town, she began experimenting with glass as a medium to pixelate her images. This innovation added abstraction and depth to her work, blurring the lines between reality and perception. In her artistic practice, pixels are not merely aesthetic elements—they symbolize individuality within a collective and reflect the human experience in society. Each pixel in Cornè Theron's work represents a specific aspect of the self. Taken as a whole, these elements merge into a coherent image, much like individuals forming a community. This conceptual framework is inspired by Neo-Impressionism, in which small, individual components come together to create a unified visual expression. In France, Theron continues to explore glass as a filter, prompted by the discovery of vintage glass in an old door during the renovation of her home. Her practice is multidisciplinary, blending traditional and digital media. She creates richly textured oil paintings on canvas that invite the viewer to look beneath the surface. Her work also encompasses photography, video, computer graphics, and animations of her digital creations. In 2020, Cornè Theron presented her first international solo exhibition, "AMA," in Frankfurt, which sold out within a week. With her 2023 exhibition “AQUA” in Kassel and a subsequent solo exhibition in Munich in 2024, curated by Dr. Sonja Lechner, she gained further recognition. Cornè Theron is considered a neo-optical contemporary artist who engages intensively with the subconscious. Water serves as a recurring metaphor in her work, symbolizing the fluid and often hidden nature of human behavior. Through this lens, she explores the question: “Why do we do what we do?” In her art, water becomes the medium for examining the depths and complexities of the human psyche in the interplay between consciousness and the unconscious. Her works, known for their intellectual and emotional depth, encourage viewers to reflect on their own behavior and motivations. Cornè Theron is supported by a number of prominent collectors, including Mike Steib, former CEO of Artsy, who has publicly praised her work. Cornè Theron currently lives in France, where she continues to develop her artistic practice and explore new perspectives on the human experience. She is represented by the Artists Gallery in Cape Town.

Jaime Danielle Smith is a Zimbabwean-born Abstract Expressionist artist currently based in Stuttgart, Germany. Her life and career have been shaped by a rich tapestry of experiences—from her early years in Harare and Cape Town to extensive travels throughout Europe, the UK, and the Caribbean. These global influences, combined with a deep connection to nature and the human condition, are central to her creative voice. After immigrating to South Africa due to political unrest in Zimbabwe, Jaime Danielle Smith pursued a degree in Film and Social Anthropology and went on to build a successful career in film production. A bold transition followed, as she spent four years working and traveling on superyachts, immersed in the landscapes and seascapes of the Mediterranean and Caribbean—environments that continue to influence her artistic perspective. Berlin marked a pivotal chapter in Jaime Danielle Smith’s journey, where her enduring passion for painting evolved into a full-time career. Largely self-taught, she approaches her practice with relentless curiosity and a commitment to experimentation, process, and growth. The birth of her daughter served as a profound catalyst, prompting Jaime Danielle Smith to fully embrace her identity as an artist and pursue painting as her primary focus. Jaime Danielle Smith's work explores the relationship between nature and the psyche, the tension between emptiness and chaos, and the emotional resonance of memory and place. Her paintings are characterized by rich layers and textures, reflecting the complexity of life’s evolving phases. She combines loose, gestural brushstrokes and dynamic mark-making with areas of calm and stillness, creating visual spaces that invite reflection and emotional connection. A process-driven artist, Jaime Danielle Smith believes that art should be felt rather than understood. She often engages with viewers who seek clarity in abstract art, emphasizing instead the power of ambiguity to evoke deeper emotional responses. Her large-scale works allow for full-body engagement and reflect her desire to create immersive, vibrant experiences that offer moments of stillness amidst life’s unpredictability. Through her work, Jaime Danielle Smith invites viewers to lose themselves in a kaleidoscope of color, texture, and feeling—discovering something new with each encounter. In 2022, Jaime Danielle Smith held her acclaimed solo exhibition ‘Mapping The Past’ in Hamburg, which garnered significant recognition and exposure. She is an active participant in the international artists’ initiative The Traveling Art Gallery and is exclusively represented in South Africa by The Artists Gallery.

Mandlenkosi Mavengere is a Zimbabwean-born artist whose work explores themes of migration, identity, and economic inequality. His art is characterized by a unique combination of printmaking and painting. Born in 1992 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Mavengere moved to South Africa after completing his secondary education, where he began his artistic career at the renowned Artist Proof Studio, completing a three-year printmaking program. At the heart of Mandlenkosi Mavengere's artistic practice lies a conceptual exploration of currency, particularly his fictional "Gondruala" banknotes. These symbolize the pursuit of wealth as a driving force behind migration and critique the socioeconomic systems that shape migrants' identities. His linocuts and etchings, often printed on canvas or fabric, depict lines representing displacement, recurring patterns reflecting systemic constraints, and portraits wearing occupational headwear that illustrate the transformation of migrants in the process of integration. Mavengere's art is deeply personal, stemming from his own experiences with the complex challenges of migration. "You are forced to abandon your values and your culture in order to adapt," he reflects. His work addresses not only the individual costs of migration but also Africa's fundamental role in the global economy. He illuminates the exploitation of the continent's natural resources and the persistent economic inequalities in a globalized world. In 2017, Mandlenkosi Mavengere was selected for a mentorship program at the William Kentridge Studio, which broadened his conceptual horizons to include sculpture and advanced printmaking techniques. Since then, he has exhibited at leading platforms such as Turbine Art Fair, AKAA Art Fair (Paris), Cape Town Art Fair, Absa Gallery, and Strauss & Co. His work is included in prestigious collections such as the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the Minerals Council South Africa. In 2025, his solo exhibition “Currency, Culture & Migration: The Print and Etching Collection of Mandla Mavengere” will be presented at the MCA Gallery – Madlozi Contemporary Art, solidifying his role as an important voice in contemporary African art. With its rich symbolism and powerful imagery, Mandlozi Mavengere’s art prompts reflection on the costs of migration, the construction of identity, and the perseverance of those seeking a better future. He is currently represented in Cape Town by the Artists Gallery, and his work continues to tour internationally with the Traveling Art Gallery.

Painting has been a defining part of Natasha's life (born 1960) since she was seven years old. A self-taught artist, she began transforming everyday scenes into works of art that instinctively found their way into numerous commercial and private collections worldwide. At the beginning of her career, she primarily painted contemporary floral and landscape scenes, many of which are still available from various publishers worldwide. As so often happens in life, she quickly took a completely different direction. Her love for Expressionism and movement could not be suppressed. "Eventually, I gave free rein to my hand and created the many large-format abstract color works for which I am known today. I am strongly influenced by nature and the teachings of the lotus flower; it is evident that beauty truly emerges from darkness. It is astonishing and inspiring that such a beautiful flower can bloom and thrive in murky water. Look for the lotus in your painting: you will find this symbol in all my works." In addition to numerous international art fairs and group and solo exhibitions, she has created artwork for Hollywood, television, greeting cards, the hotel industry, airlines, and boardrooms. Today, Natasha is one of Africa's most published artists. However, Natasha's career did not begin with art. She holds an International Grande Diplôme in Cordon Bleu cuisine, which she earned at the renowned Silwood Kitchen in Rondebosch, South Africa. Today, Natasha has her studio in Ballito, South Africa, where she also lives. When she isn't spending most of her day painting, she enjoys running marathons and spending time in the African wilderness.

A self-confessed neat-freak, Sarah Danes Jarrett was born in 1964 in the United Kingdom and raised in Zimbabwe. She studied commercial art at the Harare Technikon, completing her diploma in 1985. In 1988, she moved to South Africa, where she began her career in the design industry. In 1998, upon becoming a mother, Sarah Danes Jarrett left the design world behind and bought her first blank canvas, oil paints, and brushes. Her career as a fine artist began immediately, quickly capturing the attention of art lovers and collectors around the world. Sarah Danes Jarrett is admired for her natural simplicity and honest approach. She openly shares that her motivation is not rooted in politics or ideology, but in the pure love of painting and the creative journey it offers. Her work has always focused on people—especially faces. She is drawn to the translucency and reflective quality of skin, and the powerful presence of eyes that seem to tell stories beyond words. She intentionally uses colors that do not resemble natural skin tones, adding an element of abstraction and emotional depth. Her unique style is a paradox of chaos and control. Brazen, aggressive brushstrokes collide with soft curves, sharply defined by precise edges. This tension reflects Sarah Danes Jarrett’s own personality—a desire to create order in an ever-changing world. Her work, while bold, bright, and blocky, always maintains a sense of deliberation. White plays a pivotal role in her paintings. She begins with layers of vibrant color, and then defines the form using white paint, revealing the portrait in its final stages. Today, Sarah Danes Jarrett is recognized as one of South Africa's leading artists. She has been featured in numerous magazines and has exhibited in international art shows, with her work frequently selling out. In May 2022, Sarah Danes Jarrett showcased her work in a female-only group exhibition in Hamburg, Germany, as part of The Traveling Art Gallery. Later that year, in November, she participated in another group exhibition in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Her art was also featured in the ARTSY online exhibition New Beginnings in February 2023. In May 2023, she took part in a group show in Kassel, Germany, and in 2024, her work was featured in the Positions exhibition during Berlin Art Week, further solidifying her international presence. In Cape Town, Sarah Danes Jarrett exhibits her work at The Artists Gallery, continuing to inspire and captivate audiences with her emotionally charged and visually striking portraits.
